Wines for every pocket 2023
Italian wine is not just composed of the recognized superstars and those with grandiose names. There are also many excellent wines that can be acquired at a much more reasonable price. These are exactly the wines that we selected for Vini per Tutte le Tasche (Wines for every pocket) 2023, our pocket guide now in its third edition.
After several recent editorials dedicated to exclusive and expensive wines, here I will look at those that are more affordable for all. The latest edition of our booklet Vini per Tutte le Tasche (Wines for every pocket) 2023 will be presented in Milan and Rome between the end of November and the beginning of December, which explains why I am writing about it now. For this third edition we have selected over 600 wines from all over Italy. What they all have in common is that they retail between 6 and 15 euros, not too little and not too much.
We selected the wines during the tastings for our latest Essential Guide to Italian Wine, which includes many of them while others can only be found in this new publication. The aim of our effort is more than evident: to demonstrate that one can drink well without maxing out their credit card, which in times like these is a good thing. A selection like this one entails focusing on different winemaking areas and types of wines, some of which are little known, wines that are pleasing, immediate and easily enjoyable, all aspects not to be frowned upon.
You will not find Italy’s superstar wines, like Amarone, Barolo or Brunello, but you may discover some new wines, those that need not get tucked away in your cellar but can be consumed any day of the week. There will be many from southern and central Italy, in other words more Puglia and Abruzzo than Piedmont, but you will also find some delicious Dolcetto and Barbera, which are “normal” wines for those who live where they are produced.
Some of you leaving comments on our social media platforms have suggested that we focus more on “democratic” wines, those for “normal” people. The guide seeks to respond to this and I really hope you like it and will come to the presentations and the tastings that will accompany them. The dates, times and locations will be published on our website.
