A polemic vintage for Barolo, celebrated by most producers but with some authoritative exceptions (Bruno Giacosa). The color is intense and youthful and the aroma has notes of dog rose and licorice followed by those of Ginestra mint. The mouthfeel is clear and precise, dark, with notes of licorice and tight, lashing tannins that have difficulty settling in the finish. While thick and not too flavorful, the tannins are not, for the moment, counterpointed by the fruit as they should be. This is like a vintage 1996 but less tart. Aside from the lashing tannins, the finish is muscular and fiery and resists breathing. This vintage needs a few more years.
