Calabria wakes up

The region is Calabria is showing signs of a comeback thanks also to the Salituri family’s young Ferrocinto estate in Castrovillari, in the province of Cosenza. It is a wonderful thing to see this producer offer such interesting and well-made wines and having enologist Marco Monchiero as their consultant is a guarantee. Great attention is paid at the estate to eco-sustainability and they have achieved a balance in their energy consumption thanks to the use of solar panels and recycling waste products. The construction of a new barrel cellar closer to the more arduous vineyards and a modernization of the winemaking apparatus will improve quality even further.
The estate’s vineyards are in the Pollino Park, a magnificent location with significant temperature variations between day and night. The grapes are harvested at different times depending on the variety and this can extend into October, when the risk of snow is not uncommon. The 40 hectares of vineyards are cultivated with both white and red grape varieties both native and imported.
Here we look at a Montonico varietal wine.
