From Marche with honor
The Mirizzi family, in the winery of the same name in the Marche region, has produced a new wine, red this time, that is a true wonder: the Totus Tuus, from pure Grenache grapes.
The Mirizzi family, who have a splendid wine shop in Cinecittà, then in Rome, but are originally from the Marche region, as was the case with Severino Severini, historic trustee of the Lazio Ais in the 1980s, and with Piero and Rosy Costantini, have produced a sensational wine on their Mirizzi estate just a stone's throw from Jesi. For years now they have accustomed us to their marvelous Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Utopia, one of the greatest Verdicchios around, which they produce at the historic family estate, and, more recently, to the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Ergo, produced at the latter estate, which is also of the highest caliber, but this time they have decided to surprise us with a red.
It is called Marche Rosso Totus Tuus. The name is a bit of a hypercatholic one, which I would sympathetically describe as "kissy-kissy," and it is made with 100 percent Grenache grapes. I tasted with Livia Belardelli, a very talented contributor to DoctorWine, the 2020 version and we were speechless.
It does at least a year of maturation in wooden egg, costs a crazy amount of money, but it is a marvel and reminded me of Château Rayas, which is enough.
I won't put up the usual tasting sheet, I hope it's enough for you to know that it has aromas of resin, sweet spices, strawberry, pepper and maybe even blood orange, and that it tastes composed, warm and very balanced. It costs a whopping 140 euros in wine shops and they make less than two thousand bottles.
A marvel, I assure you.
