Augustali: an interdisciplinary farm
This new Sicilian farm is the result of an interdisciplinary project. It is situated on a plain between Alcamo and Partinico and is comprised of 12 hectares not all of which is used for wine grapes. The project, in fact, is interdisciplinary because it calls for developing a citrus grove and producing honey, wine and a little olive oil. An area is also reserved for protecting animals at risk of extinction including certain types of donkeys. Needless to say, all the farming is organic.
Wine production is in the hands of Vincenzo Bambina, a famous enologist who has cut back on his consultancy work so he can dedicate himself to this very interesting project. His wife Finella is in charge of all the other non-wine activities. His choice of grapes was both classic as well as innovative. Classic because he chose Nero d’Avola as his red grape, innovative because he picked Vermentino as his white grape, along with a small amount of Catarratto. He has also decided to keep things simple by producing just two wines, a red and a white, and not a whole slew of varieties, many useless, as many do in Sicily today.
During our visit we were able to sample all the vintages produced so far, only three. Both the red and white wine have the same name: Contrasto.
