Postcards from Campania

Seven wines for the summer from different areas of Campania to formalize the eclectic.
Campania has a rich Mediterranean vegetation and is one of the richest regions in Italy in regard to biodiversity and rare indigenous varietals. And over 50% of the towns in this southern region are in areas protected as natural reserves. There are, for example, the Cilento Park, the Punta Campanella marine reserve, the Astroni Crater and the San Silvestro Forest inside the grounds of the Caserta royal palace, the latter a UNESCO World Heritage Site, of which Campania is home to six others.
Climate plays a key role in making Campania a terra felix: cool along the Apennine mountain chain, mild in the hills, mellow on the plains and Mediterranean along the coasts. Needless to say, there is no lack of natural beauty including the rocky coastal cliffs, the many bays and grottos, the delta of the Garigliano River, the Policastro Gulf and the islands in the Bay of Naples. And all this watched over by the symbol of the region: Vesuvius.
Within this natural spectacle are some 25,000 hectares of vineyards, a significant percentage of which have not been grafted, and there are over 100 native grape varietals, a number that no other area in the world can match. The wines produced in Campania are authentic liquid postcards from winemaking areas distinguished by the different varietals grown, the vine-training methods employed, the types of soil, the individual microclimates and so on. Chalky soils alternate with volcanic and alluvial ones composed of clay lime, sand and, gravel that influence the character of the wines and their easily recognizable aromas. Those that come from the Amalfi and Sorrento Costs, the islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida have adapted to the sea and salt. Others coexist with sharp diurnal temperature variations, like the Irpinia and Sannite wines, while others still benefit from the soil of Vesuvius and the dead Roccamonfina volcano, rich in lapilli and ash. Then there are the sulfur soils of Pozzuoli and the Camp Flegrei, which produce wines that are totally out of the ordinary.
For this summer we have chosen seven wines of wines to enjoy in the city, by the sea or in the mountains that will allow to dream and recalls – through the organoleptic sensations they offer – the places there are from. Vines from appellations rich in tradition and culture.
