The Magnificent 7 Gewürztraminers of Alto Adige
Gewürztraminer is a wine that is popular in some large cities, such as Rome. A fragrant, full-bodied wine that is good on its own and with the spicy dishes of ethnic cuisine. This is our ranking of the best 7 South Tyrolean Gewürztraminers available on the market today.
In German, a name with the ending in "er" indicates provenance from a locality. In fact, Traminer most likely originated in the area of Tramin, Termeno in Italian, a small town in South Tyrol, although French ampelographers would have it come from the Jura as a subvariety of the local Savagnin.
There are two species of this grape variety: Traminer and Traminer Aromatico, the latter better known as Gewürztraminer, which literally means aromatic wine (or spiced wine) from Tramin. The difference between the two, in fact, lies precisely in the "content" of aromas. The grape variety is grown, as a matter of course, mainly in South Tyrol, and to a lesser extent in Trentino and more rarely in Veneto and Friuli. Outside Italy it can be found mainly in Alsace and the Rhine valley.
A good Gewürztraminer is obtained from old vineyards, located rather high up in areas with pronounced temperature range. It is a wine that in its best expressions is capable of maturing well beyond ten years of ageing. At full maturity it develops aromas of fruit (fig), jam, spices (cinnamon, cloves, ginger) and has an intense aroma of rose.
