Hurray for Grechetto!
This ancient grape is yielding excellent results in Umbria, with wines of interesting personality. We present Leonardo Bussoletti's Colleozio and Terre de la Custodia's Montefalco Grechetto.
Known as early as the 15th century where it appears in official documents, belonging to the exterminated Grechetto family, Grechetto is rightly considered one of the best white grapes in central Italy. Very widespread in Umbria, it is an important component of the DOC Colli Martani, the whites of Montefalco and Spello, and plays a key role in the Orvieto blend. Its best expressions are showing remarkable resilience over time.
We propose two, quite different from each other.
The first is produced by the Bussoletti winery, which was founded in 2008 in Narni. It was founded by Leonardo Bussoletti, who decided, trusting in the properties of a grape variety like Ciliegiolo, to give life to quality production. So he also founded the Association of Ciliegiolo Producers of Narni, a way to make system and spread the characteristics and properties of a vine for a long time gregarious of others, considered a grape for blending but that in purity is able to give wines of all respect. Also very interesting in the winery's production are the two whites from Grechetto (the Colleozio we present) and Trebbiano grapes.
From a small estate of 9 hectares and 50,000 bottles to a colossus of 180 with 1,800,000 bottles produced. Terre de la Custodia is the wine dépendance of the large Farchioni olive estate and is getting bigger and better year after year. The range is quite wide, but the highlights are the various labels of Montefalco Bianco, Rosso and Sagrantino that it offers. It also produces an excellent craft beer.
