A young estate to keep an eye on
Things are happening in the Cesanese area that in the past five years has been producing some top-quality wines and their numbers are growing. And here there is a small Olevano producer who should absolutely be watched: Marco Antonelli. His family has established roots in the local winegrowing scene but he, who had always worked in the vineyard, was so impressed by the quest for quality wine by other producers that he decided to follow their example. Today he owns and operates several small vineyards which together total less than three hectares. His Cesanese vines are no younger than 50 years old and some are even over 70 in a vineyard called Morra Rossa, which has a chalky-clay soil and is situated at an altitude of 500m above sea level. The grape yield per hectare is under 8,000kg and less than 2,000 in the older vineyards.
He is still at the start of his winemaking venture but already has aging in his cellar and almost ready for the market: Cesanese di Olevano Romano DOC 2014, Cesanese di Olevano Romano Riserva DOC 2015 and Cesanese di Olevano Selezione DOC 2015. In the meantime, we have been able to enjoy the fruit of his first pressing of vintage 2014 Cesanese di Olevano DOC Il Fresco. This is definitely a winery to keep an eye on.
