Grappolo Falanghina La Guardiense

Campania is the homeland of many white grapes, all very interesting. Two very famous ones, which divide wine lovers, are Greco and Falanghina. We have chosen a couple of them for each type, always among wines for every budget. Your choice.

The name Greco describes with enough clarity the origin of this grape spread in Campania and Calabria, regions which in ancient times were part of Magna Graecia. The wines our ancestors obtained from it, Falerno Bianco and Amineum, were among the most precious ones of that time. The Campania DOCG takes its name from the town of Tufo. The soil of volcanic origin and a good exposure allow this white wine, provided with intense aromas, to express structure and body, which allow it to evolve positively in bottle and to refine its bouquet for many years.

Falanghina is mainly present in Campania. Many believe it was also a component of Falerno; however its fortunes faded with time. It suffered during the phylloxera epidemic at the beginning of the twentieth century and continued to lose ground after the two world wars, when many of its vineyards were abandoned.  In recent years it is experiencing a certain commercial success thanks to its simple crispness and drinkability.

The producers we chose with their Greco di Tufo are Di Meo and Terredora, instead for Falanghina we took La Guardiense and Macchie Santa Maria Cantina.

Di Meo

Greco di Tufo 2020

93/100 - € 15,00

100% Greco grapes. Stainless steel only. Bright straw yellow color. Varied aromas of grapefruit, thyme, honeysuckle and peach. Good acidity in the mouth and neat structure. Complex despite its youth.

Terredora

Greco di Tufo Loggia della Serra 2020

91/100 - € 14,00

100% Greco grapes. Stainless steel only. Bright straw yellow color. Clear aromas of lemon leafs, yellow fruits, vegetal hints and flint. Intense and warm taste, sharp and savory. Very persistent finish. Constant quality as usual.

Roberto and Generoso Di Meo run with passion the family business established in 1986, in Salza Irpina, located in the splendid eighteenth-century farmhouse belonged to Princes Caracciolo. Their wines always excite, in particular those gems which are released only in particular vintages, such as Taurasi Riserva Hamilton, a masterpiece of balance and finesse, or Fiano di Avellino Erminia Di Meo, dedicated to her deceased sister, a cru which is released many years after harvesting. But we should not overlook Greco di Tufo...

Terredora was born with the separation of Walter Mastroberardino from the family's winery. After the painful and untimely death of Lucio Mastroberardino, Walter's son, it is his siblings Daniela and Paolo who take care of the production, with excellent results. The Terredora brand is more than ever synonymous of reliability and constant quality, and its wines can be found in all the main world markets.
