A more normal version, perhaps: it is very well made but lacks the light and shade and complexity of the preceding version. The garnet colour is somewhat deeper, with highlights that are starting to veer towards ruby. The nose is fairly broad, but the fruity tones – of raspberries and blackcurrants – are more well-defined, with fewer spicy and smoky hints, thus limiting its complexity. The flavour is positive and even slightly tannic, with good full-bodied fruit well sustained by the acidity. However, the overall taste profile offers less variety, even if it is of excellent length. It is less well-balanced than the ’98, and is especially a little more coarse.
