Cult Wine: Faro Palari, the beginning
This is now a cult wine. It is produced by Salvatore Geraci with the aid of oenologist Donato Lanati, and has been since the early 1990s. The barely seven hectares of vineyards are in the hamlet of Santo Stefano Briga, between Messina and Taormina, on the outlying spurs of the Peloritani Mountains, and from there one overlooks the Strait of Messina, with a clear view of the seafront of Reggio Calabria.
The varieties from which Faro Palari is made are Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio, with a small proportion of Nocera. Production at present is no more than 25,000 bottles and the price in a wine shop of the currently available vintages is between 35 and 40 Euros a bottle. This vertical tasting takes into account those wines that have actually been released onto the market, and therefore begins with the 1996. Other versions were produced previously, starting with the 1990, but only in tiny quantities, so the bottles never actually went on sale.
In Italy it is distributed by Castello Banfi.
