Passion, Climate and Altitude
‘’Passion, climate and altitude’’ are the three ingredients needed to produce a good Pinot Nero, according to Franz Haas whose family has been making wine in Alto Adige for seven generations. Since 1800 they have grown Riesling, Moscato Rosa, Sauvignon, Moscato Bianco and, above all, Pinot Nero. For him Pinot Nero is almost an obsession, a mission, one that obviously has Burgundy in mind. And the archetype of excellence for this winemaker is from Cote de Nuits, the town of Vosne-Romanée, La Tache, a 1953 to be precise.
Franz Haas is quite a character, someone immediately likeable with his big black moustache framing a face that is not a typical for Alto Adige. He talks a lot and his words reveal his love for Pinot Nero and a distinct tenacity. He uses images to describe his wines, observing how ‘’a wine needs to be erotic, it must be intriguing… like a women in high heels and a flowing striped skirt’’. In order to achieve the vision he has for his wine, Haas has just acquired half a hectare near Montagna, in an area considered to be very similar to Burgundy for both its climate and soil. He hopes to see his first results in three years.
