Mr. Rupert’s vineyards (5): Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons
The winery is located on the border between the zones of Franschhoek and Paarl, in Fredreickburg and below Simonsberg. It was set up in 1997 by Anton Rupert and Edmond de Rothschild who later passed responsibility to their sons, respectively, Antonij and Benjamin. When his brother died in 2001, Johann Rupert took his place. The management of the winery is independent and separate from the others in the group. Schalk-Willem Joubert is in charge of the winemaking, while Debra Savage handles marketing. The wines have a very French style, Burgundy-esque for the Chardonnay and rigorously Bordeaux-esque for the reds. This is obviously due to the influence in the joint venture of such a leading figure in Bordeaux winemaking, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild.
