Roots and traditions (2)
It is important to understand that the south is not all the same. Here in Irpinia we are only 50km from Naples but we are in the mountains that are as high as 2,000,’’ Piero Mastroberardini pointed out to us. ‘’The trees here are pines and hardwood and in the winter it often snows and it rains a lot. This is not your typical south, the ‘O sole Mio’ of Neapolitan songs. And our personalities here are different, too, more closed because we are mountain men. And even our dialect is different. Our white wines, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, have both body and acidity and have much more in common with Chablis than Sicilian whites. Taurasi, made from Aglianico grapes, is a great red that ages well. Many say it is more like a Barolo and in a way this is true, even if each territory expresses its uniqueness through its grapes and wine’’.
The following reviews are the result of two separate tastings, the first during the Campania Stories event and the second during the Merano Wine Festival.
